ABOUT THE 2009 BMW Z4 SDRIVE35I
The 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i is the launch-year version of the second-generation Z4 (E89), a two-seat roadster with a folding hardtop. It uses the N54 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic; a six-speed manual was standard.
A new Z4
The E89 replaced both the first-generation Z4 roadster and coupe with a single car whose two-piece aluminium roof folds into the boot. Production moved from the US to Regensburg, Germany. The styling was softer than the previous Z4, and the cabin became more upmarket, with iDrive available.
What it is like
The sDrive35i was the faster of the two launch versions, above the naturally aspirated sDrive30i. Its twin-turbo engine gives strong mid-range performance, and the car leans more towards refined grand touring than its harder-edged predecessor. With the roof lowered, boot space shrinks noticeably.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N54 issues include high-pressure fuel pump and injector failures, wastegate rattle and electric water pump failures. Check that the roof operates smoothly and that the drains are clear. Rivals in 2009 included the Porsche Boxster S, Mercedes-Benz SLK350 and Audi TTS Roadster.
