The 2009 BMW M3 Coupe is the fourth-generation M3 (E92), a four-seat, two-door coupe. It uses a high-revving 4.0-litre S65 V8 producing 414 hp and 295 lb-ft, with rear-wheel drive. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch transmission; a six-speed manual was standard.
The year M DCT arrived
The E92 M3 reached the US for 2008, and the 2009 model year added the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission as an option. It offered very fast shifts, several driving modes and a launch control function, and quickly became a popular choice. The E92 generation was the first M3 to use a V8, replacing the inline-six of its predecessor.
Engineering highlights
The S65 V8 revs to around 8,400 rpm and was derived from the V10 used in the M5. The coupe has a carbon-fibre roof to save weight and lower the centre of gravity, and a power-dome bonnet. Variable M differential lock, uprated brakes and wider tracks distinguish it from the regular 3 Series coupe, and the rear seat holds two.
