ABOUT THE 2006 BMW X5
The 2006 BMW X5 in this entry is the X5 3.0i, the six-cylinder version of the first-generation X5 (E53), built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. Its 3.0-litre inline-six makes 225 hp and 214 lb-ft, and every X5 has permanent all-wheel drive. This entry covers the version with the five-speed automatic; a manual gearbox was also offered.
The final E53 year
2006 was the last model year for the original X5 before the larger E70 arrived for 2007, adding an optional third row. By this point the E53 had received its 2004 facelift, which brought revised headlights and grille, the xDrive all-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled clutch, and the 4.4i and 4.8is V8s alongside the 3.0i.
Living with it
The X5 was one of the first SUVs to prioritise on-road handling, with car-like steering and body control. The 3.0i is the most economical of the range but has modest performance in a vehicle of this weight. The five-seat cabin is well made and the split tailgate is handy for loading the boot.

Rivals
The X5 3.0i competed with the Mercedes-Benz ML350, Lexus RX 330, Volvo XC90, Acura MDX and Volkswagen Touareg.
