ABOUT THE 2023 AUDI RS 5 SPORTBACK
The 2023 Audi RS 5 Sportback is the top performance version of the B9-generation A5 Sportback, a five-door liftback. It uses a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 444 hp and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm), with an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic and quattro all-wheel drive.
Background
The RS 5 Sportback was introduced to the US for the 2019 model year and received a facelift for 2021, which brought a wider, lower grille, revised lighting and a larger MMI touchscreen in place of the earlier rotary controller. The 2023 car carries over that updated design. The 2.9 TFSI engine was developed alongside Porsche and is related to the engine in the S6 and S7, but in RS 5 form it does without their 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
What it is like
The Sportback layout adds rear doors and a hatchback to the RS 5 formula, making it noticeably more practical than the two-door RS 5 Coupe while keeping the same performance. The quattro system has a rearward torque bias, and an optional sport rear differential helps the car turn more eagerly. Dynamic Ride Control suspension was available on many examples.
Buying one today
Running costs include large brakes, high-performance tyres and more expensive servicing than a regular A5. Check for a complete service record and signs of hard use, and confirm that the electronic features and suspension modes operate as intended.
Rivals
Rivals included the BMW M3 Competition xDrive, the BMW M4 Competition xDrive coupe and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
