ABOUT THE 2022 TOYOTA CAMRY AWD LE/SE
The 2022 Toyota Camry AWD LE and SE are all-wheel-drive versions of the eighth-generation Camry saloon. Toyota added all-wheel drive to four-cylinder Camrys for the 2020 model year — the first time an all-wheel-drive Camry had been offered in North America since the All-Trac models of the late 1980s and early 1990s. It uses the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic, and is built in Georgetown, Kentucky.
How the AWD works
The Camry’s system mainly drives the front wheels and can send up to half of the engine’s torque to the rear axle when it detects slip. To save fuel, it can disconnect the rear driveline when it is not needed. It gives the Camry extra traction in rain and snow without much penalty in economy — the AWD Camry is rated only a few MPG below the front-drive car. See our drivetrain guide for more on AWD.
What it is like
Otherwise it is a typical Camry: quiet, comfortable, roomy for five and well equipped, with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ driver-assistance package as standard. The SE adds sportier styling and suspension.
Rivals
All-wheel-drive mid-size saloons are rare. The Camry AWD’s closest rivals are the Nissan Altima AWD, Subaru Legacy and Kia K5 AWD.
