ABOUT THE 2021 TOYOTA CAMRY AWD XLE/XSE

The 2021 Toyota Camry AWD XLE/XSE covers the all-wheel-drive versions of the two upper four-cylinder trims of the eighth-generation Camry (XV70), a mid-size saloon built in Georgetown, Kentucky. Its 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 202 hp and 182 lb-ft (247 Nm) in AWD form and drives through an eight-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered.

What was new for 2021

All-wheel drive became available on the Camry for the 2020 model year, the first time in decades the model had been offered with it. For 2021 the whole range received a mid-life refresh, with revised front-end styling, a larger touchscreen on upper trims and an updated Toyota Safety Sense driver-assistance suite. The XLE focuses on comfort and equipment, while the XSE adds sportier styling and suspension tuning.

How the AWD works

Toyota’s system can send up to half the engine’s torque to the rear wheels when it detects slip, and it can disconnect drive to the rear axle when it is not needed to reduce fuel use. AWD cars are rated at 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway (about 9.4 and 6.9 L/100km), only slightly below front-wheel-drive versions. Read more in our guide to FWD, RWD, AWD and 4WD drivetrains.

Practicality

The XV70 has a roomy cabin with generous rear legroom and a large boot. The Camry has a strong reputation for reliability, and the four-cylinder AWD versions avoid the extra complexity of the V6 or hybrid models, neither of which was offered with all-wheel drive.

Rivals

Its all-wheel-drive rivals included the Nissan Altima AWD, Subaru Legacy and Kia K5 AWD.
