2005 Ford GT
The 2005 Ford GT is a coupe. It has a 5.4-litre supercharged eight-cylinder engine producing 550 hp (410 kW), with a 6-speed manual and rear-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 3.5 seconds and top speed is 205 mph (330 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2005 FORD GT
The 2005 Ford GT is a mid-engined two-seat supercar inspired by the GT40 racing cars that won Le Mans in the 1960s. It uses a supercharged 5.4-litre V8 with 550 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, the only gearbox offered.
The launch year
The Ford GT went on sale for the 2005 model year, following a 2002 concept car and prototypes built for Ford’s centenary in 2003, and production ended during 2006. Around 4,000 cars were built in total, which makes it one of the most collectable American cars of its era. Ford quoted a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h). It was assembled in Michigan, United States.
Engineering
The GT is built around an aluminium spaceframe with aluminium body panels, and the V8 uses dry-sump lubrication so it can sit low in the chassis. The roof-cut doors echo the original GT40, and the cabin is strictly a two-seater with limited luggage space. A 106.7-inch (2,710 mm) wheelbase and wide tyres give it the stance of a race car.
Owning one today
Most surviving cars have covered low mileages and are kept as collector cars. Ownership considerations include specialist maintenance, ageing rubber parts and tyres on cars that are rarely driven, and parts availability for the unique components. Documented history and originality matter greatly to value.
Rivals
In its day the Ford GT was compared with the Porsche Carrera GT, Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Murciélago.
