ABOUT THE 2005 FORD FREESTYLE FWD
The 2005 Ford Freestyle is a three-row crossover wagon, launched for the 2005 model year. It is powered by a 3.0-litre Duratec V6 producing 203 hp and 207 lb-ft, driving the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). All-wheel drive was also offered.
A new crossover for Ford
The Freestyle debuted alongside the Ford Five Hundred saloon, sharing a platform derived from Volvo engineering. It was built in Chicago, Illinois. The Freestyle was designed as a more car-like alternative to traditional SUVs, offering high seating, three rows of seats and easier access. In 2008 it was updated and renamed the Ford Taurus X.
Practicality
The Freestyle seats up to seven, or six with optional second-row captain’s chairs, and the third row folds flat into the floor to create a large cargo area. Its lower step-in height compared with a body-on-frame SUV makes it easier for children and older passengers to climb aboard.
Buying one today
The CVT is the main concern: transmission failures are commonly reported, and repairs can be costly. The 3.0-litre V6 is generally durable, though water pump and cooling-system issues are known weak points. Check for smooth acceleration without slipping or whining from the transmission.
Rivals
The Freestyle competed with the Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, as well as conventional minivans.
