ABOUT THE 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED FWD
The 2005 Ford Five Hundred is a full-size, front-wheel-drive saloon launched for the 2005 model year to replace the Taurus as Ford’s largest car. It uses a 3.0-litre Duratec V6 rated at 203 hp and 207 lb-ft (281 Nm). This entry covers the version with the continuously variable transmission (CVT); front-wheel-drive models were also offered with a six-speed automatic.
A new kind of big Ford
The Five Hundred was built in Chicago on a platform derived from the Volvo S80, and all-wheel drive was available as an option. Its tall body and high “command” seating position were intended to give SUV-style visibility in a car.
Practicality
The cabin is very roomy, and the boot is one of the largest of any saloon of its time. The rear seats fold, and the front passenger seat folds flat on some versions for long loads.
Buying one today
The CVT is the most commonly reported weak point, and a repair can be expensive. The 3.0 V6 was also criticised as underpowered for a car of this size, which Ford addressed when it updated the car and renamed it Taurus for 2008 with a larger 3.5-litre engine.
Rivals
The Five Hundred competed with the Toyota Avalon, Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300 and Buick LaCrosse.
