ABOUT THE 2001 FORD FOCUS STATION WAGON

The 2001 Ford Focus Station Wagon is the estate version of the first-generation Focus, launched in North America for the 2000 model year. It uses the 2.0-litre Zetec twin-cam four-cylinder, rated at 130 hp and 135 lb-ft (183 Nm), and drives the front wheels. This entry covers the version with the four-speed automatic.

A new kind of small Ford

The Focus replaced the Escort and was a big step forward. Its “New Edge” design, tall cabin and multi-link rear suspension gave it a roomy interior and handling that was widely praised in its class. 2001 was only its second year on sale, so the wagon was still close to its launch specification.

Practicality

The wagon adds a long, square load area with a split-folding rear seat, making it one of the more practical small cars of its time. Its upright roofline gives good headroom front and rear.

Buying one today

Early Focus models were recalled several times, so it is worth checking that recall work has been completed. Other known weak points include worn engine mounts, automatic gearbox faults and ignition switch problems. Check the rear arches and sills for rust.

Rivals

The Focus wagon competed with the Volkswagen Jetta Wagon, Subaru Impreza wagon and Saturn SW.
