The 2000 Ford Windstar is a front-wheel-drive minivan from the second generation of the Windstar, which was introduced for the 1999 model year. Ford used the name “Wagon” for the passenger version, as opposed to the Cargo van. This entry covers the version with the 3.0-litre V6 and a four-speed automatic; a more powerful 3.8-litre V6 was fitted to most of the higher trim levels.
The second-generation Windstar
The 1999 redesign gave the Windstar a sliding door on both sides, addressing a major weakness of the original model, which had only one. Power sliding doors were available on upper trims. The 2000 model was the second year of this design, which continued until the Windstar was replaced by the Freestar for 2004. The Windstar was built at Ford’s Oakville plant in Ontario, Canada.
Practicality
Seating for seven, a long wheelbase and a large load area behind the third row made the Windstar a capable family vehicle. Rear seats could be removed to create a large cargo space.
Buying one today
Known weak points of this generation include the four-speed automatic transmission, rust affecting the rear axle and suspension components, broken coil springs and failing sliding-door mechanisms. Head gasket problems are commonly reported on the 3.8-litre V6, which is one reason the simpler 3.0-litre is sometimes preferred.
