ABOUT THE 2000 FORD F150 PICKUP 2WD

The 2000 Ford F-150 belongs to the tenth-generation F-Series, introduced for 1997 with rounded styling and a new family of engines. This 2WD entry is the rear-wheel-drive truck with the base 4.2-litre V6, an engine of roughly 200 hp, and covers the version with the four-speed automatic; a five-speed manual was also offered, as were 4.6- and 5.4-litre Triton V8s.

The 2000 line-up

Buyers could choose a regular cab or a SuperCab, which by this point had rear-hinged access doors on both sides, plus Styleside or Flareside beds in different lengths. The supercharged SVT Lightning sat at the top of the 2WD range, and the Harley-Davidson Edition was introduced for 2000. The four-door SuperCrew did not arrive until the 2001 model year.

What the V6 suits

The 4.2 V6 is an older overhead-valve design that suits light work and everyday use. Two-wheel-drive F-150s ride lower than the 4×4 versions and use coil-spring front suspension, which makes them easier to load and a little more economical.

Commonly reported problems on the 4.2 include intake manifold gasket and coolant leaks. Rust around the cab corners, rear wheel arches and brake lines is worth checking, and high-mileage trucks often need front suspension and steering parts.

Rivals

The F-150 competed with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Dodge Ram 1500 and the new-for-2000 Toyota Tundra.
