2000 Ford Escort

The 2000 Ford Escort is the second generation of Ford’s North American compact Escort, here in four-door saloon form. It uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder (SPI) engine producing 110 hp and 125 lb-ft, driving the front wheels. Late in the Escort’s run

The redesigned Escort arrived for the 1997 model year with rounded styling and the larger 2.0-litre engine. The estate version was dropped after 1999, leaving the saloon and the separately named ZX2 coupe for 2000. Ford had already introduced the Focus as its new compact for the 2000 model year, so the Escort saloon was entering its final phase; it continued afterwards mainly for fleet buyers.

What it is like

The Escort was a simple, economical and inexpensive-to-run small car. The 2.0-litre engine gives adequate performance for town and commuter use, and the car’s light weight helps fuel economy. The interior is basic but functional, with space for four adults and a reasonably sized boot.

Buying one today

Surviving examples are now old cars, so condition matters more than specification. Commonly reported issues include automatic transmission problems, cooling-system wear, oil leaks and rust in areas exposed to road salt. Check that the timing and accessory belts have been maintained and that the brakes and suspension are in good order.
