ABOUT THE 2017 FERRARI CALIFORNIA T
The 2017 Ferrari California T is the turbocharged second edition of Ferrari’s entry-level grand tourer, a 2+2 convertible with a folding hardtop rather than the saloon listed in older data. It uses a 3.9-litre (3,855 cc) twin-turbocharged V8 producing 552 hp and 557 lb-ft (755 Nm), sending drive to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Where 2017 fits
The California T replaced the naturally aspirated California for 2015, marking Ferrari’s return to turbocharging in a road car for the first time since the F40. By 2017 it was late in its life, and the Portofino that succeeded it was revealed in September of that year. The Handling Speciale package, introduced in 2016, was available on this model, adding firmer suspension, quicker gearshifts and a more vocal exhaust.
The turbo V8
Ferrari used Variable Boost Management, which limits torque in the lower gears and increases it progressively in the higher ones, to make the engine feel more like a high-revving naturally aspirated unit. A dedicated display shows turbo boost and engine performance. The engine also gave a big gain in torque and efficiency over the previous 4.3-litre V8.
Practicality
The two small rear seats are best for children or bags, but the folding hardtop, reasonable boot and comfortable ride make the California T one of the easier Ferraris to use daily. Boot space shrinks when the roof is stowed.
Rivals
Competitors included the Mercedes-AMG SL63, Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, Bentley Continental GT V8 S Convertible and Maserati GranCabrio.
