ABOUT THE 2024 BMW M8 COMPETITION CONVERTIBLE
The 2024 BMW M8 Competition Convertible is the open-top version of BMW’s flagship M car, based on the 8 Series (G14). Its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 produces 617 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. In the US, the M8 was sold only in Competition specification.
Late in the model’s life
The 8 Series range was refreshed for 2023 with a larger central touchscreen running a newer iDrive and minor styling tweaks, and the 2024 M8 carried those changes over. By this point the M8 was one of the last BMW M models built around the S63 V8 without electrification.
The car
The soft top opens electrically and can be operated on the move at low speed. The M xDrive system can be switched into a rear-drive-only mode for experienced drivers, while adjustable dampers and setup buttons let owners tailor the car. Four seats are fitted, though the rear pair suits only children or bags. It is built at Dingolfing in Germany.
Buying one today
Higher oil consumption is commonly reported on S63 V8s, and the engine’s heat management relies on several cooling circuits worth checking. Brakes and tyres are expensive consumables, and the roof mechanism should be tested thoroughly.
Rivals
Competitors included the Mercedes-AMG SL 63, the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet and the Bentley Continental GTC.
