ABOUT THE 2022 BMW X6 M50I
The 2022 BMW X6 M50i is the V8 performance model of the third-generation X6 (G06), BMW’s coupe-styled large SUV. Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 produces 523 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), driving all four wheels through xDrive and an eight-speed Steptronic automatic.
Where 2022 sits
The G06 X6 arrived for the 2020 model year, and 2022 fell in the middle of its pre-facelift run. The M50i sat between the six-cylinder xDrive40i and the full X6 M, offering most of the M car’s straight-line pace with a more comfortable ride. When the X6 was facelifted for 2024, the M50i was replaced by the mild-hybrid M60i. Like every X6, it was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Equipment and character
Standard equipment includes adaptive M suspension, M Sport brakes and larger wheels than the six-cylinder model. The V8 gives the heavy SUV strong acceleration and a muscular soundtrack, while the 2,975 mm wheelbase and wide track keep it stable at speed. The sloping roof trims rear headroom and boot space compared with the X5, and seating is for five.
Buying one today
The N63 V8 is powerful but has a long-standing reputation for oil consumption and for oil and coolant leaks as it ages, and the hot-vee turbocharger layout makes some repairs labour-intensive. Large wheels and tyres, brakes and the electronic systems add to running costs, so look for a documented service history and consider an extended warranty.
Rivals
Competitors included the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe, the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and the Audi SQ8.
