ABOUT THE 2022 BMW X5 XDRIVE45E
The 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e is the plug-in hybrid version of the fourth-generation X5 (G05). It combines BMW’s 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, giving a combined system output of 389 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. xDrive all-wheel drive is standard.
Plug-in technology
The xDrive45e reached the US for the 2021 model year, replacing the earlier four-cylinder X5 xDrive40e with a far more capable powertrain. Its battery has a gross capacity of 24 kWh, enough for an EPA-rated electric range of 31 miles (about 50 km), which covers many daily commutes without using petrol. The 2022 model year continued with few changes; the X5 was facelifted for 2024, when the xDrive50e replaced this model. Like the rest of the X5 range, it is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Practicality
The battery is mounted beneath the floor, so the xDrive45e is a five-seater only; the third-row seat offered on some X5 models is not available. Boot space is slightly reduced compared with the petrol X5 xDrive40i. Charging from a Level 2 home charger is the most practical way to use the electric range regularly.
Buying one today
Check the charging equipment, the charge port and the high-voltage system’s health with a dealer diagnostic if possible. The inline-six petrol engine is generally regarded as robust, though coolant leaks from plastic pipes and the expansion tank are commonly reported on this engine family.
Rivals
Rivals included the Volvo XC90 Recharge T8, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid and the Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring.
