ABOUT THE 2022 BMW M550I XDRIVE SEDAN
The 2022 BMW M550i xDrive Sedan is the V8-powered performance model of the facelifted seventh-generation 5 Series (G30), sitting just below the M5. It uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 rated at 523 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
More power after the facelift
The M550i xDrive joined the G30 range for the 2018 model year, and the 2021 facelift raised its output substantially to 523 hp. The 2022 model kept that specification, making it one of the quickest non-M saloons BMW sold in that period. The G30 was replaced by the G60 for 2024.
On the road
The M550i combines the comfort and space of a 5 Series with a muscular V8 and the traction of all-wheel drive. M Sport brakes are standard. The result is a discreet but very fast executive saloon, with a usable boot and good rear-seat space.
Buying one today
BMW’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 family has a history of higher oil consumption and heat-related wear in the “hot-vee” area between the cylinder banks, including turbo oil and coolant lines and valve-cover gaskets. Look for strict oil-change records and budget for higher maintenance than a six-cylinder 540i.
Rivals
Rivals included the Mercedes-AMG E53, Audi S6 and Genesis G80 3.5T Sport.
