ABOUT THE 2022 BMW IX XDRIVE50 (20 INCH WHEELS)
The 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 is the launch version of BMW’s all-electric iX (I20), a five-seat SUV built on a dedicated EV architecture. Two electric motors, one on each axle, produce 516 hp and 564 lb-ft (765 Nm), with all-wheel drive and a single-speed transmission. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds. This entry covers the car on 20-inch wheels, which gives an EPA-rated range of 324 miles (about 521 km).
A new flagship
The iX arrived for 2022 as BMW’s technology flagship, introducing the curved display and iDrive 8, a hexagonal steering wheel and a body structure combining aluminium, high-strength steel and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic. Its tall, closed-off kidney grille houses sensors for the driver-assistance systems. In the US the xDrive50 was the only version at launch, with the more powerful M60 added later.
Battery and charging
The battery has about 105 kWh of usable capacity, and DC fast charging peaks at up to 195 kW. The iX is built in Dingolfing, Germany. Larger 21- or 22-inch wheels reduce range, so wheel size is worth checking.
Practicality
With a 3,000 mm wheelbase and a flat floor, the cabin is very roomy for five, and the boot is a good size, though there is no front storage compartment.
Rivals
The iX competed with the Tesla Model X, Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-PACE and Rivian R1S.
