ABOUT THE 2022 BMW 228I XDRIVE GRAN COUPE
The 2022 BMW 228i xDrive Gran Coupe is the entry model of the first-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44), a compact four-door saloon with a coupe-style roofline. It uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder rated at 228 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
A different kind of 2 Series
Despite the name, the Gran Coupe is unrelated to the rear-drive 2 Series Coupe. It sits on BMW’s front-wheel-drive-based UKL2 architecture, shared with the X1 and X2, so the engine is mounted transversely and xDrive sends torque to the rear axle when needed. It went on sale in the US for 2020, and the 2022 model year sat mid-way through its life, with the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe above it in the range.
Practicality
The F44 has four doors and five seats, although the sloping roof limits rear headroom for taller adults. The boot is a reasonable size for a compact saloon, and the cabin uses BMW’s Live Cockpit infotainment of the period. The 228i was built in Leipzig, Germany.
Buying one today
The B46/B48-family four-cylinder has a good reputation for durability, and the car shares many parts with the X1 and X2. Commonly reported items include oil leaks with age, infotainment software glitches and wear on the low-profile tyres fitted to many cars. Check that the automatic shifts smoothly from rest.
Rivals
In 2022 its rivals included the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 4MATIC and Audi A3 Sedan quattro.
