ABOUT THE 2021 BMW M240I CONVERTIBLE
The 2021 BMW M240i Convertible is the most powerful open-top version of the first-generation 2 Series (F23), and 2021 was its final model year. It uses BMW’s 3.0-litre turbocharged B58 inline-six with 335 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm), and this entry covers the rear-wheel-drive car with the eight-speed Steptronic automatic; xDrive all-wheel drive was also available.
The end of a line
The F23 convertible arrived for the 2015 model year, and the M240i name replaced the earlier M235i for 2017. When the second-generation 2 Series coupe (G42) arrived for 2022, BMW did not offer a convertible version, so the 2021 car is the last soft-top 2 Series. That gives it some appeal for buyers who want a compact BMW convertible with a six-cylinder engine.
What it is like
The electrically operated fabric roof folds into the area above the boot, which costs some luggage space when lowered. There are four seats, but the rear pair is best suited to children or short trips. The inline-six is the main attraction: smooth, flexible and strong from low revs, with the automatic well matched to it.
Buying one today
The B58 has a good reputation. Commonly reported items include coolant leaks from the expansion tank or plastic cooling pipes and oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket. Check that the roof operates smoothly and that drain channels are clear.
Rivals
Alternatives in 2021 included the Audi S5 Cabriolet, the Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet and the Ford Mustang GT convertible.
