ABOUT THE 2020 BMW M5 COMPETITION
The 2020 BMW M5 Competition is the more powerful version of the F90 M5, a high-performance sedan built in Dingolfing, Germany. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 is rated at 617 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic and M xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 3.1 seconds.
The last pre-facelift year
The F90 M5 launched for the 2018 model year as the first M5 with all-wheel drive, and the Competition model joined for 2019. The 2020 model year was the final one before the 2021 facelift, which brought new lights, an updated interior and revised suspension tuning. A 2020 car therefore has the original F90 styling.
What the Competition adds
Over the standard M5, the Competition has more power, stiffer engine mounts, a lower ride height, firmer suspension settings and an M Sport exhaust, along with gloss-black exterior details. M xDrive can be set to a rear-wheel-drive-only mode with stability control switched off, giving the car a dual character.
Buying one today
High-performance V8 M cars are costly to maintain. Check brake and tyre condition carefully, since they wear quickly on hard-driven cars, and look for signs of track use. Oil leaks and turbo-related cooling issues are among the points commonly reported on BMW’s twin-turbo V8s, so a pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist is worthwhile.
Rivals
Its main rivals were the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ and the Porsche Panamera Turbo, with the Audi RS 7 Sportback arriving for 2021.
