The 2020 BMW M2 Competition Coupe is a coupe. It has a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 405 hp (302 kW), with a 7-speed automated manual and rear-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 4.0 seconds and top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2020 BMW M2 COMPETITION COUPE
The 2020 BMW M2 Competition is the high-performance version of the F87 M2, a compact two-door coupe built in Leipzig, Germany. It uses the S55 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, adapted from the M3 and M4, rated at 405 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm), and it drives the rear wheels through an Active M differential. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT), for which BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.0 seconds; a six-speed manual was also offered.
Where 2020 sits
The M2 Competition replaced the original N55-engined M2 for the 2019 model year. For 2020 it was joined by the limited-production M2 CS, which used a more powerful version of the same engine. The Competition remained the main M2 version until the F87 generation was retired; the next M2 (G87) arrived for the 2023 model year.
What changed over the first M2
Beyond the stronger S55 engine, the Competition gained a carbon-fibre strut brace, revised suspension and steering, extra cooling capacity, a larger kidney grille and M Sport seats with illuminated badges. The result is a more focused, more capable car than the earlier M2.
Buying one today
The S55’s crank hub is a widely discussed concern among owners, particularly on tuned cars. Check that the DCT shifts cleanly, look for signs of track use such as worn brakes and tyres, and favour unmodified examples with full service history.
Rivals
The M2 Competition competed with the Porsche 718 Cayman S, Audi TT RS and Ford Mustang GT.
