ABOUT THE 2020 BMW ALPINA B7
The 2020 BMW Alpina B7 is the Alpina-developed high-performance version of the sixth-generation 7 Series (G12), sold in North America only in long-wheelbase form. Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 produces 600 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
What changed for 2020
The 2020 model year brought the 7 Series facelift, so the B7 gained the larger kidney grille, slimmer headlights and revised rear lights of the updated car, plus Alpina’s own front apron, tailpipes and classic multi-spoke wheels. Inside, the facelift added BMW’s iDrive 7 operating system. Alpina quoted a top speed of 205 mph, which made the B7 one of the fastest saloons on sale.
What it is like
Alpina’s approach is relaxed, long-distance pace rather than track focus. The V8 is retuned with uprated turbochargers, the air suspension and active roll stabilisation are recalibrated, and the car lowers itself at speed. The cabin has Alpina-specific leather, badging and trim, and the rear compartment offers the full limousine legroom of the long-wheelbase body.
Buying one today
The B7 is built at BMW’s Dingolfing plant and finished by Alpina in Buchloe, Germany. Ownership costs follow the 7 Series: the twin-turbo V8 needs careful maintenance, and commonly reported items include oil and coolant leaks, air-suspension wear and electronic faults. A full service history is especially important.
Rivals
The B7 competed with the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC+, Audi S8 and Porsche Panamera Turbo.
