The 2020 BMW 440i Coupe is the six-cylinder, rear-wheel-drive version of the first-generation 4 Series Coupe (F32). It uses the B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 320 hp and 330 lb-ft. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; the 440i was also available with xDrive all-wheel drive.
The F32’s farewell
The 2020 model year was the final one for the original 4 Series Coupe, which had launched for 2014 as the two-door successor to the 3 Series Coupe. The redesigned G22 4 Series, with its controversial large kidney grille, took over for 2021. As a result, the 2020 440i represents the most developed form of the F32, with the updates from its 2018 facelift, including revised lights and interior trim, already incorporated.
What it is like
The B58 engine is smooth and punchy, and with the rear-drive chassis it gives the 440i a classic sporting BMW character that sits between the four-cylinder 430i and the M4. The coupe body seats four, with a rear bench that suits occasional adult use, and the boot is reasonably practical for a two-door.
Buying one today
The B58 has a strong reputation, but coolant leaks from the expansion tank and hoses are commonly reported, along with oil leaks on higher-mileage engines. Check for kerbed wheels and worn run-flat tyres, which affect ride quality.
