ABOUT THE 2020 BMW 440I CONVERTIBLE
The 2020 BMW 440i Convertible is the six-cylinder, rear-wheel-drive drop-top of the first-generation 4 Series (F33), in its last model year. It uses the B58 turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six rated at 320 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic. An xDrive all-wheel-drive version was also sold.
A folding hardtop to the end
The F33 kept the three-piece retractable steel hardtop used on the E93 3 Series Convertible, giving a coupe-like profile and good refinement when the roof is up. The 440i arrived for 2017 as the replacement for the 435i, bringing the newer B58 engine. After 2020 BMW replaced this car with the G23 4 Series Convertible, which switched to a lighter fabric roof.
Practicality
There are four seats, with rear space best suited to children or short trips. The hardtop folds into the boot, so luggage room shrinks noticeably with the roof down and a luggage divider must be in place before the roof can be lowered. The steel roof makes the car heavier than the equivalent coupe.
Buying one today
Check that the roof operates smoothly through its full cycle, and look for water leaks and worn seals, since roof hydraulics and sensors are costly to fix. On the B58, commonly reported issues include coolant leaks and oil-filter-housing gasket leaks.
