ABOUT THE 2019 BMW X2 XDRIVE28I
The 2019 BMW X2 xDrive28i is the all-wheel-drive version of the F39 X2, a sporty compact crossover built in Regensburg, Germany. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 228 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) through an eight-speed automatic, and BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 6.3 seconds.
Year two and the arrival of the M35i
The X2 launched for 2018, and for the 2019 model year BMW added the more powerful X2 M35i above the xDrive28i. The xDrive28i itself carried over with only minor changes, remaining the core all-wheel-drive version of the range. It gave buyers the X2’s coupe-like styling with year-round traction.
How xDrive works here
Because the X2 is based on BMW’s transverse-engine UKL2 platform, the xDrive system is front-biased: it normally drives the front wheels and uses an electronically controlled clutch to send torque to the rear axle when grip is needed or when accelerating hard. This makes the X2 feel secure in wet or snowy conditions without much penalty in everyday driving.
Practicality and ownership
The X2 is around 7 cm lower than the X1, so it has a sportier driving position but less rear headroom and a smaller boot. It remains usable for a small family. Points to check when buying include coolant leaks, the rear-axle coupling on xDrive cars, worn run-flat tyres and any infotainment software updates.
Rivals
In 2019 the X2 faced the Volvo XC40, Jaguar E-Pace, Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3.
