ABOUT THE 2019 BMW M2 COMPETITION
The 2019 BMW M2 Competition is the uprated version of the F87 M2, BMW M’s compact two-door coupe. It uses the S55 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, derived from the M3 and M4, producing 405 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm), and drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission; a six-speed manual was also offered.
A new top model
2019 was the first model year of the M2 Competition in North America, and it replaced the original M2, whose N55-based engine produced 365 hp. Along with the S55 engine came extra cooling, a carbon-fibre strut brace, revised chassis tuning, larger optional M brakes, new M Sport seats and a revised kidney grille. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.0 seconds with the dual-clutch gearbox.
What it is like
The M2 Competition is known for its short wheelbase and wide tracks, giving lively, playful handling. It is a four-seater coupe with a usable boot, so it can be used daily, although the ride is firm. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, or higher with the optional M Driver’s Package.
Buying one today
Owners widely discuss the S55’s crank hub as a potential weak point on heavily modified engines; on standard cars it is rarely an issue. Check for track use, tyre and brake wear, and any aftermarket tuning.
