ABOUT THE 2018 BMW 430I XDRIVE CONVERTIBLE
The 2018 BMW 430i xDrive Convertible is the four-seat folding-hardtop version of the F33 4 Series, built in Germany. It is powered by BMW’s B46 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 248 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed Steptronic automatic.
The facelift year
For 2018 the 4 Series range received its mid-life update (LCI). Changes included LED headlights and redesigned LED tail lights, reshaped bumpers, a revised interior with more chrome detailing and an updated iDrive system, plus retuned suspension intended to sharpen handling. The 2018 car is therefore the first of the refreshed F33 convertibles.
Roof and practicality
Unlike most rivals, the F33 uses a three-piece retractable steel hardtop rather than a fabric roof. It gives a quieter, more coupe-like cabin with the roof up, but it adds weight and eats into boot space when stowed. The rear seats are usable for adults on short trips, and a wind deflector is useful for top-down driving.
Buying one today
Check that the roof operates smoothly through its full cycle, look for water leaks around the seals and listen for creaks. Run-flat tyres were standard and can be costly to replace. The 2.0-litre engine has a better reliability record than the N20 it replaced, but service history still matters.
Rivals
Its main competitors were the Audi A5 Cabriolet quattro and the Mercedes-Benz C 300 4MATIC Cabriolet.
