ABOUT THE 2017 BMW 330E
The 2017 BMW 330e is the plug-in hybrid 3 Series saloon in its second US model year. Based on the facelifted F30, it pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic. Total system output is 248 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm), and it is rear-wheel drive.
A year of continuity
The 330e carried over largely unchanged for 2017 after its 2016 debut. Its lithium-ion battery still gave an EPA-rated electric range of 14 miles (about 23 km), which is enough for short commutes and city errands when charged regularly. A full charge from a Level 2 wallbox takes around a couple of hours, while a standard household socket is much slower.
How the hybrid system works
The driver can choose AUTO eDRIVE, which blends petrol and electric power automatically; MAX eDRIVE, which keeps the car electric for as long as possible; and SAVE BATTERY, which holds or builds charge for later use. Electric-only driving is available at motorway speeds in MAX eDRIVE. With the battery depleted, the 330e behaves like a conventional four-cylinder 3 Series.
Practicality
The battery sits beneath the boot floor, so luggage space is smaller than in a petrol 3 Series, and the fuel tank is also smaller. Rear-seat space is unchanged.
Buying one today
Confirm the real electric range against the original figure and check the charging cable and port. Hybrid-system faults are best diagnosed by a BMW dealer or experienced specialist.
Rivals
Competitors included the Mercedes-Benz C350e and Audi A3 Sportback e-tron.
