ABOUT THE 2016 BMW M4 GTS
The 2016 BMW M4 GTS is a limited-production, track-focused version of the F82 M4 coupe. Its 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged S55 inline-six gains a water-injection system and is rated at 493 hp and 442 lb-ft, up from 425 hp in the regular M4. It drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission.
A special edition
Production was limited to around 700 cars worldwide, with a share allocated to the US. Water injection sprays a fine mist into the intake plenum to cool the incoming air, allowing higher boost without knock. It was the first production BMW to use this technology. Other changes include a carbon-fibre bonnet, an adjustable front splitter and rear wing, OLED tail lights and three-way adjustable coilover suspension.
Built for the track
The rear seats are removed, making it a strict two-seater, and lightweight interior parts replace some of the regular M4’s comfort features. A Clubsport-style package with a roll bar, harnesses and fire extinguisher was available in some markets. The car is aimed squarely at circuit use, and the stiff set-up makes it less comfortable on poor roads than a standard M4.
Buying one today
Because of its rarity, the M4 GTS is now largely a collector’s car, and condition and history matter more than usual. Check for track wear on brakes, tyres and suspension, and confirm that the water-injection reservoir and pump work correctly. The S55’s crank hub design is a commonly discussed topic among owners, particularly for cars with tuning.
