2016 BMW M4 Convertible
The 2016 BMW M4 Convertible is a convertible. It has a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 425 hp (317 kW), with a 7-speed automated manual and rear-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 4.1 seconds and top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2016 BMW M4 CONVERTIBLE
The 2016 BMW M4 Convertible is the open-top version of the F82/F83 M4, the high-performance member of the 4 Series family (this body is the F83). It uses the S55 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, rated at 425 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm), and drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission; a six-speed manual was also available.
Where it sits
The M4 badge replaced the M3 name for two-door models with this generation, and the F83 was the second model year of the M4 Convertible in the US after its 2015 launch. It shares its engine and running gear with the M4 Coupe and M3 saloon, but adds a three-piece folding steel hardtop.
What it is like
The S55 gives huge mid-range punch compared with the high-revving V8 of the previous M3, along with better economy. The folding roof adds weight and some stiffness is lost compared with the Coupe, so the Convertible is best seen as a fast, refined open tourer. It seats four, and boot space drops markedly when the roof is stowed.
Buying one today
Commonly discussed S55 concerns include the crank hub, which some owners have upgraded as a precaution, plus charge-pipe failures on tuned cars and cooling-system wear. The folding hardtop’s seals and mechanism should be checked for smooth, complete operation.
Rivals
Rivals included the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, the Audi S5 Cabriolet and the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible.
