ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 435I XDRIVE CONVERTIBLE
The 2016 BMW 435i xDrive Convertible is the open-top model in the first-generation 4 Series range, coded F33. It has a three-piece folding steel hardtop, four seats, and a 3.0-litre N55 turbocharged straight-six producing 300 hp and 300 lb-ft (about 407 Nm). Drive goes to all four wheels via xDrive, and this entry covers the eight-speed automatic version.
A farewell to the 435i
The 4 Series Convertible launched for the 2014 model year as the successor to the E93 3 Series Convertible, and the xDrive option widened its appeal in colder climates. The 2016 model year was the last for the 435i badge; from 2017 the convertible was sold as the 440i with the B58 engine. Buyers wanting the N55 in drop-top form therefore have to look at 2014–2016 cars.
Roof and practicality
The hardtop gives coupe-like refinement and security when raised and folds into the boot in around 20 seconds. With it stowed, luggage space shrinks noticeably, so touring with the roof down needs careful packing. An optional neck-level heating system, called Air Collar, makes cool-weather driving with the top down more comfortable. Rear seats are usable by adults on short journeys.
Buying one today
Check that the roof cycles smoothly and that its sensors, hydraulics and seals work properly, as repairs can be expensive. The N55 engine’s known weak points are gasket oil leaks, electric water pump failure and intake carbon build-up. The extra weight of the roof and xDrive system means tyres and brakes deserve a close look.
Rivals
Its main rivals were the Audi S5 Cabriolet and the Mercedes-Benz E 400 Cabriolet.
