ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 320I
The 2016 BMW 320i is the base saloon of the sixth-generation 3 Series (F30) in its facelifted form. It is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 180 hp and 200 lb-ft, sending drive to the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; all-wheel-drive 320i xDrive models were also sold.
The mid-life update
For 2016 BMW gave the F30 its Life Cycle Impulse facelift. Changes included reshaped bumpers, revised headlights and LED-style tail lights, updated cabin trim and chassis retuning. Above the 320i, the line-up was reorganised: the 328i gave way to the new 330i and the 335i to the 340i, both with new engines. The 320i carried on with the same output as before, remaining the most affordable way into a 3 Series saloon.
Living with it
The appeal of the 320i is that it delivers the same cabin space, boot and well-balanced rear-drive chassis as the pricier models, with lower running costs. Acceleration is modest by 3 Series standards, but the eight-speed automatic makes good use of the torque and the car is a relaxed motorway cruiser.
Known weak points
Items often mentioned by owners of F30 four-cylinder cars include oil leaks around the valve cover and oil filter housing, coolant pump failure and worn suspension bushes on higher-mileage examples. A car with documented regular oil changes is preferable.
Rivals
Competitors in 2016 included the Mercedes-Benz C300, Audi A4 2.0T, Lexus IS 200t and Cadillac ATS.
