ABOUT THE 2015 BMW X1 XDRIVE35I

The 2015 BMW X1 xDrive35i is the six-cylinder, all-wheel-drive version of the first-generation X1 (E84), BMW’s smallest SUV at the time. It uses the N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft (400 Nm), and pairs it with a six-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.

The final year of the E84

The E84 X1 arrived in the US for the 2013 model year, and 2015 was its last. For 2016 it was replaced by the F48 X1, which moved to a front-drive-based platform and dropped the six-cylinder engine. That makes the xDrive35i one of the few compact premium SUVs with a turbocharged straight-six, and the last X1 with a longitudinal, rear-biased layout.

What it is like

Based on the E90-era 3 Series, the X1 feels more like a raised estate car than a tall SUV, with car-like handling and strong straight-line performance from the six-cylinder. Rear seat space and boot capacity are modest compared with later rivals, and the interior shows its older design, but it is a compact, usable five-seater.

N55 weak points include oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, the electric water pump and thermostat, and ignition coils. The six-speed automatic benefits from fluid servicing despite BMW’s “lifetime” claim. Check the all-wheel-drive transfer case for noise or judder.

Rivals

Competitors included the Audi Q5 and the new Audi Q3, the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC, the Range Rover Evoque and the Volvo XC60 T6.
