ABOUT THE 2015 BMW 228I XDRIVE CONVERTIBLE
The 2015 BMW 228i xDrive Convertible is the all-wheel-drive soft-top version of the first-generation 2 Series (F23), launched for the 2015 model year as the successor to the 1 Series Convertible. It is powered by the 2.0-litre N20 turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 240 hp and 255 lb-ft, with drive sent to all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
New for 2015
The 2 Series Convertible joined the 2 Series Coupe, which had arrived a year earlier. It is longer and wider than the outgoing 1 Series Convertible, with more cabin and boot space. The 228i replaced the six-cylinder 128i as the entry model, swapping the old naturally aspirated six for a turbocharged four with more torque. Adding xDrive to a small convertible was unusual and appeals to buyers in regions with harsh winters.
Living with it
The fully automatic fabric roof can be operated at low speeds, and the cabin seats four, with rear space best suited to children or short journeys. Boot space shrinks when the roof is folded, but an available through-loading system makes it easier to carry longer items.

The N20 engine’s best-known weak point is wear in its timing-chain guides, which can lead to chain failure if ignored; listen for a whining or rattling noise. Other commonly reported issues include oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets and electric coolant pump failure.
Rivals
The closest rival was the Audi A3 Cabriolet, which was also offered with quattro all-wheel drive. The MINI Cooper S Convertible offered a smaller, front-drive alternative.
