ABOUT THE 2014 BMW Z4 SDRIVE35IS
The 2014 BMW Z4 sDrive35is is the most powerful version of the second-generation Z4 (E89), a two-seat roadster with a two-piece folding aluminium hardtop. It uses the N54 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six producing 335 hp and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm), with an overboost function that briefly raises torque to 369 lb-ft. It drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the only gearbox offered on the 35is.
Where it sits
The E89 Z4 launched for 2009, and the sDrive35is joined above the 300 hp sDrive35i for 2011. By 2014 it was mid-way through a run that ended in 2016, sold alongside the four-cylinder sDrive28i. The 35is adds an M aerodynamic kit, adaptive M suspension and specific wheels, and BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
Roadster with a hard roof
The retractable hardtop makes the E89 quieter and more secure than the earlier soft-top Z4, and it folds in about 20 seconds. The trade-off is boot space, which shrinks considerably when the roof is stowed. The car feels more like a refined grand tourer than a raw sports car.
Buying one today
Known N54 weak points include the high-pressure fuel pump, piezo injectors, wastegate rattle and electric water pump failure. Check the roof’s hydraulics, sensors and seals, and look for any history of dual-clutch transmission faults.
