ABOUT THE 2013 BMW X6 M
The 2013 BMW X6 M is the high-performance version of the first-generation X6 (E71), a coupe-styled five-door SUV built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Its S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 555 hp and 500 lb-ft, with drive going to all four wheels through xDrive and a six-speed M Sport automatic with paddle shifters.
Final year of the first X6 M
Launched for the 2010 model year alongside the X5 M, the X6 M and its sister car were the first M models with all-wheel drive and the first with turbocharged engines. 2013 was its last year; BMW did not offer a 2014 X6 M, and the next-generation F86 arrived for 2015. The engine’s turbochargers sit in the vee of the V8 with a cross-bank exhaust manifold, a layout BMW used to sharpen throttle response.
Performance and practicality
Dynamic Performance Control varies torque between the rear wheels to help such a heavy vehicle turn in, and Adaptive Drive with active anti-roll control was part of the package. The sloping roof limits rear headroom, and the rear seating is shaped mainly for two. EPA ratings of 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway (about 19.6 and 13.8 L/100km) show the cost of the performance.
Buying one today
The S63 is known for heat-related problems: oil consumption, valve stem seal wear, coolant leaks, turbo failures and misfires from worn ignition coils and spark plugs. Large brakes and tyres are expensive to replace. A specialist inspection is strongly recommended.
Rivals
Competitors included the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and Range Rover Sport Supercharged.
