ABOUT THE 2013 BMW X5 XDRIVE35D
The 2013 BMW X5 xDrive35d is the final-year diesel version of the second-generation X5 (E70), built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Its 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel inline-six develops 265 hp and 425 lb-ft (580 Nm), driving all four wheels through xDrive and a six-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered.
The last E70
The 2013 model year closed the E70’s run before the third-generation X5 (F15) arrived for 2014. By this point the E70 had been on sale for seven model years and had received its facelift for 2011, so a 2013 car is the most developed version of the design. The diesel kept the six-speed automatic to the end, while the petrol models used an eight-speed unit. The successor continued to offer an xDrive35d, using a newer diesel engine.
Strengths
The diesel delivers effortless performance and strong towing ability thanks to its high torque, and its economy is a clear improvement on the petrol V8. The X5’s cabin remains spacious and well finished, with a large boot and an optional third row for children.

Emissions hardware is the main area to check: NOx sensors, the diesel exhaust fluid (urea) tank heaters and pump, EGR parts and the particulate filter are all commonly reported failure points, and repairs can be costly. A diesel driven mainly on long journeys is generally a better bet than one used for short local trips. Inspect the suspension and check for oil leaks as well.
Rivals
In 2013 the X5 xDrive35d competed with the Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTEC, Audi Q7 TDI, Volkswagen Touareg TDI and the new Porsche Cayenne Diesel.
