ABOUT THE 2013 BMW 328I XDRIVE
The 2013 328i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the sixth-generation BMW 3 Series, the F30, which launched for the 2012 model year. It marked a major change for the 3 Series in North America: the 328i swapped its traditional six-cylinder engine for a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (the N20), producing 240 hp. In this version it drives through an eight-speed automatic and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
What changed for this generation
Turbocharging gave the four-cylinder more low-down pull than the six-cylinder 328i it replaced, while improving fuel economy. The F30 is also bigger than the E90 before it, with a longer wheelbase that freed up useful rear legroom. Automatic engine stop-start became standard, and the Driving Experience Control switch lets drivers choose between ECO PRO, Comfort and Sport modes. Buyers could pick Sport, Luxury or Modern design lines, which changed the trim and wheels.
xDrive all-wheel drive
xDrive normally sends more power to the rear wheels, keeping the 3 Series’ rear-drive feel, and shifts torque forward when the rear tyres start to slip. It is a sensible choice where winters are snowy, at the cost of a little extra weight and fuel use compared with the rear-wheel-drive 328i. Buying one today
The most important thing to check on early N20 engines is the timing chain and its plastic guides, which were a known wear point on 2012–2015 cars; listen for a whine or rattle and ask whether the chain has been inspected or replaced. Oil leaks and electric coolant pump failures are also common on BMWs of this period. A full service history is especially valuable.
