ABOUT THE 2013 BMW 135I

The 2013 BMW 135i is the turbocharged six-cylinder version of the first-generation 1 Series coupe (E82), a compact two-door with four seats and rear-wheel drive. Its N55 3.0-litre single-turbo inline-six makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. A six-speed manual was standard; this entry covers the version with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT).

The final year

2013 was the last year of the 1 Series in the US before the 2 Series and M235i took over for 2014. The 135i had switched from the twin-turbo N54 to the N55 for 2011, when the DCT also replaced the earlier conventional automatic. For 2013 BMW also sold a 135is with 320 hp and an extra cooling package, so the regular 135i was the more common choice.

What it is like

The appeal is a strong turbocharged six in a short-wheelbase (2,660 mm) car, giving brisk performance and a playful chassis. The cabin is compact, the rear seats are tight for adults and the boot is modest, but it is a usable four-seater for occasional passengers.

Buying one today

Weak points on the N55 include the plastic charge pipe, which can crack under boost (especially on tuned cars), oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, and the electric water pump. Many 135i coupes have been modified, so check for engine tuning and ask for service records. Run-flat tyres were standard and give a firm ride.

Rivals

Comparable cars in 2013 included the Audi TTS, Infiniti G37 Coupe and Mercedes-Benz C350 Coupe.
