The 2012 BMW 640i Convertible is the six-cylinder version of the third-generation 6 Series soft-top (F12). Its turbocharged 3.0-litre N55 inline-six produces 315 hp and 300 lb-ft and drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic.
A new 6 Series
The F12 Convertible was the first body style of the new-generation 6 Series to reach US buyers, arriving for the 2012 model year ahead of the F13 coupe and, later, the four-door Gran Coupe. It replaced the E64 convertible with a smoother, less angular design and a cabin closely related to the F10 5 Series. The 640i was new to the range, offering a six-cylinder alternative to the V8 650i, a choice the previous generation did not offer in the US.
Top-down practicality
The fabric roof uses a “fin” design with a vertical rear window that can be lowered independently, allowing ventilation with the roof up. The roof folds electrically, and the 6 Series seats four, though the rear seats are best for children or short trips. Boot space shrinks when the roof is stowed.
Buying one today
Check that the roof operates smoothly and that seals do not leak. Commonly reported N55 issues include electric water pump failure and leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets.
