The 2012 BMW 328i Coupe is the entry six-cylinder two-door from the E92 3 Series coupe range, in its facelifted form. It uses a naturally aspirated 3.0-litre inline-six producing 230 hp and 200 lb-ft (270 Nm), driving the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also available.
A coupe that kept the six
The 2012 model year was a transition point for the 3 Series. The new F30 saloon arrived with a turbocharged four-cylinder in its 328i, but the coupe and convertible continued on the previous E9x platform with the six-cylinder engine. The E92 coupe had been facelifted for 2011 with new headlights, LED rear lights and reshaped bumpers. From 2014 the coupe was renamed the 4 Series, so the 2012 and 2013 cars are among the last 3 Series coupes.
What it is like
The free-revving six gives smooth, linear performance and an appealing sound. The chassis is well balanced and the steering is precise, if a little heavier than in later electrically assisted BMWs. The coupe is a four-seater with two individual rear seats, adequate for adults on shorter trips, and the boot is practical for the class. An xDrive all-wheel-drive version was also sold.
Buying one today
Commonly reported issues include leaks from the valve-cover and oil-filter-housing gaskets, electric water pump and thermostat failure, and worn suspension bushings. Check that run-flat tyres are in good condition, as they are costly to replace.
