ABOUT THE 2011 BMW M3 SEDAN

The 2011 BMW M3 Sedan was the final model year of the four-door E90 M3. It uses the S65 4.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, rated at 414 hp and 295 lb-ft, which revs beyond 8,000 rpm and drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch transmission; a six-speed manual was standard.

The last four-door M3 of its generation

The saloon joined the E92 coupe in 2008, bringing back a four-door M3 for the first time since the E36. Production of the E90 M3 ended after 2011, while the coupe and convertible continued to 2013. The next M3 saloon would be the turbocharged F80 for 2015, so this was the last V8 four-door M3.

What it is like

The S65 is the highlight: a high-revving V8 with a hard-edged sound. The saloon has a steel roof rather than the coupe’s carbon-fibre one, and offers easier rear access and a usable boot, making it the most practical of the E9x M3s. EPA economy was rated at 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway (about 16.8 and 11.8 L/100km).

Rod-bearing wear is the most widely discussed S65 concern, and many owners replace the bearings as preventive maintenance. Throttle actuators are another known weak point. Rivals included the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, Cadillac CTS-V and Lexus IS F.
