ABOUT THE 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 LWB XDRIVE
The 2011 BMW Alpina B7 LWB xDrive pairs Alpina’s high-output version of BMW’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8, rated at 500 hp and 516 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive and the long-wheelbase body of the fifth-generation 7 Series (F02). Power is delivered through a six-speed automatic operated with Switch-Tronic steering-wheel buttons.
Why choose xDrive
All-wheel drive was added to the 7 Series range for 2010, and Alpina followed with xDrive versions of the B7. With so much torque on tap, the extra traction makes the car easier to use in wet or snowy weather, while normal operation remains rear-biased. The trade-off is some added weight and slightly higher fuel consumption than the rear-drive car.
Alpina character
The B7 was completed by Alpina in Buchloe, Germany, using cars from BMW’s Dingolfing plant. The emphasis is on effortless high-speed cruising and comfort: Alpina retuned the suspension and fitted its trademark multi-spoke wheels, Alpina-badged instruments and special interior trims. In the long-wheelbase body, the 3,210 mm wheelbase gives rear passengers a lot of space.
Ownership
Because it is built around BMW’s first-generation N63 engine, owners should watch for that unit’s commonly reported problems, including oil consumption, valve-stem seal wear, timing-chain issues and injector failures. The xDrive transfer case and the 7 Series’ air suspension and electronics add further items to inspect. Specialist knowledge of Alpina models is an advantage when servicing.
Rivals
All-wheel-drive alternatives included the Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC and Audi A8 L quattro, while the Bentley Continental Flying Spur sat above it.
