ABOUT THE 2010 BMW X6 XDRIVE50I
The 2010 BMW X6 xDrive50i is the V8 version of the first-generation X6 (E71), the coupe-styled SUV built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. It uses the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged N63 V8, producing 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic.
Where it sits
The X6 started a new segment when it went on sale for 2008, combining X5 mechanicals with a sloping, coupe-like roofline. The xDrive50i was the first BMW to use the N63 engine, with its turbochargers placed inside the V of the engine. For 2010 the range grew with the 555 hp X6 M and the ActiveHybrid X6, leaving the xDrive50i as the most powerful regular model.
Driving and practicality
Dynamic Performance Control, a torque-vectoring rear differential, was standard and helps the heavy X6 turn in more sharply than its size suggests. The trade-off for the styling is reduced headroom in the back and a smaller boot than the X5, and visibility to the rear is limited.
Buying one today
Known N63 weak points include oil consumption, valve stem seals, timing chains, injectors and heat-damaged coolant hoses and wiring. Transfer case and Dynamic Performance Control faults have also been reported. A thorough service record is important.
Rivals
There were few direct competitors. Alternatives included the Porsche Cayenne S, Range Rover Sport Supercharged, Mercedes-Benz ML550 and Infiniti FX50.
