The 2010 BMW X5 M was the first M-badged SUV, built alongside the X6 M in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on the E70 X5. It uses the S63 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, rated at 555 hp and 500 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive and a six-speed M Sport automatic with paddle shifters.
Launch year
2010 was the X5 M’s debut year, and it continued largely unchanged until the E70 was replaced by the F15-based X5 M for 2015. Like BMW’s N63, the S63 places its turbochargers inside the V of the engine, but it adds a cross-bank exhaust manifold for sharper response, and the car offers launch control. Adaptive dampers and Dynamic Performance Control, which actively splits torque between the rear wheels, were standard.
Practicality and running costs
Unlike the regular X5, the X5 M was not offered with a third-row seat, but the five-seat cabin and boot remain spacious. Fuel use is heavy: EPA figures were 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway (about 19.6 and 13.8 L/100km). Brakes and large performance tyres wear quickly given the car’s weight.
