ABOUT THE 2009 BMW 135I CONVERTIBLE

The 2009 BMW 135i Convertible is the soft-top version of the E88 1 Series, the smallest BMW sold in North America at the time. It is powered by the N54 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, and drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.

Where it sits

The 1 Series convertible went on sale in the US in 2008, so 2009 was its second model year. The 135i sat above the 128i, adding the twin-turbo engine, firmer M Sport-style suspension, larger brakes and more aggressive bumpers. For 2009 it still used the N54 engine; the 135i switched to the single-turbo N55 for 2011.

Practicality

The fabric roof folds electrically and stows above the boot, so luggage space shrinks when the roof is down. It is a genuine four-seater, though the rear seats suit children or short trips. Ride quality is firm, reflecting the 135i’s sporting set-up.

The N54 is strong and tunable, but known weak points include high-pressure fuel pump failures, piezo injector problems, wastegate rattle and the electric water pump. Inspect the roof mechanism, seals and drains for leaks. Rivals in 2009 included the Audi A4 Cabriolet, Infiniti G37 Convertible and Volvo C70.
