Facelift and new engine for 2008
The 2008 model year brought the 5 Series’ mid-cycle update. The wagon gained revised headlights and tail lights, an updated interior and an electronic gear selector, and the 535xi replaced the earlier 530xi wagon. The switch from the naturally aspirated 3.0-litre to the twin-turbo N54 gave a substantial increase in torque, which suits the extra weight of an estate.
Practicality
The E61 offers a long load area, split-folding rear seats and a tailgate window that can be opened on its own. Self-levelling rear suspension helps when the car is heavily loaded, and a panoramic glass roof was available. It is one of the few all-wheel-drive, six-cylinder luxury estates offered in North America at the time.
Buying one today
Well-known N54 issues include high-pressure fuel pump failure, leaking injectors, wastegate rattle and turbocharger oil leaks, plus electric water pump failure. On the wagon, inspect the rear air suspension and tailgate hardware, and listen for transfer-case noises.
