The last “xi” wagon
The 328xi name replaced the earlier 325xi when the 3.0-litre engine was introduced for 2007. The 2008 model year was the final one for the “xi” badge and for the original E91 styling: for 2009 BMW facelifted the 3 Series saloon and wagon and renamed the all-wheel-drive models xDrive, so this car became the 328i xDrive Sport Wagon. In the US the wagon was offered only with the 328 engine.
Practicality
The Sport Wagon shares the saloon’s 2,760 mm wheelbase, so rear-seat space is the same, but the longer roof and tailgate with an opening glass rear window add useful flexibility. Folding rear seats expand the load area, and all-wheel drive makes it a capable all-weather family car.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N52 issues include oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets and failure of the electric water pump and thermostat. On all-wheel-drive models, the transfer case actuator motor is a known weak point, so check for warning lights and smooth operation.
